NDDC Advocates Collaborations to Curb Plastic Pollution in the Niger Delta

NIGER DELTA-PROGRESS-REPORTERS

A Collective Call for Environmental Sustainability
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reiterated its commitment to promoting environmental sustainability by calling for collaboration with key stakeholders to combat the growing menace of plastic pollution in the region. This appeal was strongly emphasized during the NDDC’s World Environmental Day Seminar held in Port Harcourt. Representing the Commission, the Director of Environmental Protection and Control, Engr. Onouha Obeka, underscored the need for a unified approach to addressing this environmental challenge.

Uniting Stakeholders for a Greener Future
Engr. Obeka stressed that while NDDC has made notable contributions over the years toward safeguarding the environment—such as donating waste management infrastructure and engaging in grassroots sensitization—the scale of plastic pollution requires broader cooperation. “NDDC alone cannot tackle this burden,” he said. “We need the involvement of subnational governments, legislative support, law enforcement, and active participation of community leaders to preserve and protect the environment for future generations.”

Empowering New Thinkers and Driving Change
The seminar served not just as a platform to commemorate World Environmental Day, but as a strategic initiative to spark a new wave of environmental consciousness. It brought together environmental experts, community stakeholders, policymakers, and the media to explore sustainable solutions to plastic pollution in the Niger Delta. According to Obeka, the goal was to “encourage new thinkers, catalyze behavioural changes, and create awareness among regional stakeholders and citizens.”

NDDC’s Proven Track Record in Environmental Stewardship
Over the years, the NDDC has shown consistent dedication to improving the ecological landscape of the Niger Delta. Through strategic interventions such as the distribution of waste management facilities and awareness campaigns, the Commission has laid a solid foundation for environmental protection. Communities across the region have benefited from improved sanitation infrastructure and educational outreach programmes designed to instill environmental responsibility.

A Renewed Call for Partnership
While these achievements are commendable, Engr. Obeka maintained that the complexity and scale of plastic pollution call for a deeper and more inclusive approach. He emphasized the importance of forging partnerships across different levels of governance and sectors. “To truly win the war against plastic waste, we must strengthen our collaboration. It is not just about NDDC; it is about a collective vision for a cleaner, healthier Niger Delta,” he remarked.

A Forward-Looking Vision Under Effective Leadership
Under the dynamic leadership of the current Managing Director of NDDC, the Commission is expanding its vision beyond physical infrastructure to include strategic environmental interventions. The MD’s administration has continued to position the Commission as a proactive force in sustainable development, recognizing that a healthy environment is fundamental to the well-being and prosperity of the people.

Conclusion: A Shared Responsibility for the Niger Delta
Plastic pollution is more than an environmental issue; it is a public health threat and an obstacle to sustainable development. The NDDC’s renewed call for partnership reflects its commitment to driving change and fostering a cleaner future for the Niger Delta. Through coordinated action, legislative support, and grassroots engagement, the region can overcome the threat of plastic pollution. The leadership of the NDDC remains unwavering in its mission to protect the Niger Delta’s natural heritage and to build a resilient and environmentally conscious society
