Fostering Unity in Diversity
During the NDDC’s 25th anniversary celebration held at the General Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, delivered a message deeply rooted in unity and regional identity. He emphasized the importance of strengthening relationships and building a sense of brotherhood among the people of the Niger Delta, despite their ethnic and cultural diversity.
“We are here today to foster conviviality amongst ourselves as the people of the Niger Delta; to network amongst ourselves, to build relationships and to bond as a people,” he declared. Drawing a parallel with the recently held Niger Delta Sports Festival—the first of its kind—Dr. Ogbuku explained how such initiatives help cultivate a spirit of togetherness, solidarity, and love. “We might differ in tribes, but the Niger Delta is one, Nigeria is one,” he concluded, reminding all present that unity is essential for lasting development.
A Night of Reflection and Purpose
At the Gala Night held at the EU Event Centre on July 12, 2025, which marked the conclusion of the NDDC@25 celebration, Dr. Ogbuku once again offered valuable insights into the Commission’s path forward. Though a full transcript of his speech is yet to be released, his message was clear and consistent with earlier public remarks.
He used the occasion to reflect on the Commission’s journey over the last 25 years, placing its work within the broader context of national development. Echoing his earlier statements during the Asaba press briefing, he emphasized the Commission’s unwavering commitment to completing legacy projects—including roads, bridges, schools, and health facilities—that have direct impact on communities across the region.
Embracing Reforms and Stakeholder Collaboration
One of the key highlights of Dr. Ogbuku’s remarks was his focus on institutional reforms. He noted the ongoing partnerships with stakeholders and the adoption of modern governance mechanisms. In collaboration with consulting firm KPMG, the NDDC has embraced innovations such as digital procurement systems and the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track and evaluate project delivery.
These reforms, he explained, are aimed at transforming the Commission into a transparent and performance-driven institution, in line with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A Call to Collective Responsibility
Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that the transformation of the Niger Delta cannot rest on the shoulders of the Commission alone. “It is not only by our efforts; it is the collaborative efforts from all the stakeholders who believe the time has come when there should be stability in the NDDC,” he said. He underscored that the growing stability within the Commission presents both an opportunity and a responsibility—to finally deliver on the long-cherished dream of sustainable development for the region.
By grounding his messages in unity, reform, and shared responsibility, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku not only celebrated the past but also charted a clear and hopeful course for the future of the Niger Delta
