Commitment to Coastal Protection and Project Completion

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), under the leadership of its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has prioritized coastal protection and the completion of abandoned projects. This commitment is aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes finishing long-standing projects critical to community development.

Tackling Coastal Erosion and Ocean Surge

The NDDC has been proactive in addressing the challenges of coastal erosion and ocean surges that threaten many riverine communities. Acting on a presidential directive, the commission visited the Sangana community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State to assess the impact of a devastating ocean surge. Dr. Ogbuku assured residents that the NDDC would deploy modern technology to mitigate the problem and promised to revisit and complete previously awarded shore protection contracts in the area.

Reviving Abandoned Projects

One of the hallmarks of Dr. Ogbuku’s administration is the completion of projects abandoned for years, particularly those concerning coastal protection and infrastructure. The commission has resumed work on numerous projects that had stalled, ensuring that investments already made yield tangible benefits for communities.

Key Coastal Protection Projects

Delta State:
The NDDC has awarded shore protection contracts for the Itsekiri riverine communities of Ogheye and Aja-Udaibo. Work is expected to begin soon to safeguard these settlements from the dangers of ocean surges. Dr. Ogbuku also inspected and pledged to complete a stalled shoreline protection and reclamation project in Ogborodo, a coastal community in Delta State.

Bayelsa State:
In Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, the commission has vowed to complete the Amassoma shoreline protection project, which has been a long-standing demand of the local population.

Rivers State:
The NDDC has resumed work on a 1.2-kilometer bridge that is part of a 2-kilometer road linking the coastal communities of Kaa and Ataba. Abandoned for over a decade, this project is now progressing under the renewed focus of the commission.

Infrastructure Development in Coastal Areas

Beyond direct coastal protection, the NDDC is investing in vital infrastructure that connects riverine and coastal communities. The construction of roads and bridges is creating access to previously isolated areas, stimulating trade, and improving the living conditions of residents. Notable examples include the Kaa-Ataba and Okrika-Borokiri road and bridge projects in Rivers State.

Embracing Partnerships for Development

Recognizing the scale of the challenges facing the Niger Delta, the NDDC has adopted a partnership-driven model to fast-track project execution. Collaborations with government agencies, private sector players such as the Nigeria LNG (NLNG), and state governments are helping to ensure faster delivery and better outcomes.

Conclusion

The approach of the NDDC under Dr. Samuel Ogbuku is defined by accountability, continuity, and collaboration. By focusing on completing inherited projects, tackling environmental challenges, and developing essential infrastructure, the commission is making a significant impact in safeguarding coastal communities and driving sustainable development across the Niger Delta.
