Introduction

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has once again demonstrated its commitment to grassroots development under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, as the people of Otuan in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have applauded the Commission for the ongoing internal road construction in their community.

Monarch Commends NDDC Leadership

Representing the collective voice of the community, including the Council of Chiefs, the Community Development Committee (CDC), youth bodies, and residents, the Amananaowei of Otuan, King Christopher Nana Okoto (Akama VI), expressed deep appreciation for the project. The traditional ruler highlighted the construction of approximately three kilometers of internal roads alongside the installation of solar-powered streetlights as a major stride in improving infrastructure and the general well-being of the people.

King Nana Okoto praised the NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, for including Otuan in the Commission’s development agenda, describing him as a man of his word whose actions match his promises. He also commended Dr. Doode Week, NDDC’s Director of Procurement, for his instrumental role in facilitating the commencement of the project.

Impact on Local Economy and Livelihoods

The traditional ruler emphasized the socio-economic importance of the project, noting that the internal roads and accompanying infrastructure will significantly enhance mobility, stimulate local businesses, and improve living standards in Otuan. He remarked that better access within the community will also facilitate agricultural activities, trade, and social integration.

Call for Community Support and Unity

King Nana Okoto called on residents, particularly the youth, to support the ongoing project by cooperating with contractors and ensuring a peaceful environment conducive to timely completion. He stressed the importance of unity among community members, urging them to work together to attract additional developmental initiatives.

According to the monarch, the road project complements existing development efforts by the Bayelsa State Government under Governor Douye Diri’s Prosperity Administration. He specifically mentioned the ongoing bridge construction connecting Angiama to Oporoma and Otuan, describing it as a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity.

Background of the Project

The road construction follows a comprehensive needs assessment carried out in May this year by a team from the NDDC, led by Dr. Doode Week. During the visit, the team engaged with community stakeholders to understand their development priorities and identify key areas for intervention. The interaction formed the foundation for initiating the current project, which aims to address pressing infrastructural challenges in Otuan.

Conclusion

The Otuan community’s commendation of the NDDC underlines the growing trust and collaboration between local communities and the Commission. Through visionary leadership and stakeholder engagement, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku’s administration continues to deliver on its promise of inclusive development across the Niger Delta region.
