PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA – The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), under the leadership of Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has intensified efforts to uplift underprivileged students through a series of scholarship programmes aimed at driving human capital development across the oil-producing states.

The initiatives, which form part of the commission’s wider developmental mandate, are designed to open doors of opportunity for promising young people, preparing them for leadership roles in both local and international spheres.

Foreign Post-Graduate Scholarship Programme

The commission’s flagship Foreign Post-Graduate Scholarship Programme has, over the years, enabled thousands of students to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees in top-tier universities across the globe. The programme focuses on building a generation of highly skilled professionals who can bridge knowledge gaps and contribute meaningfully to regional and global progress.

Local Post-Graduate Scholarship Programme

In a strategic shift to address the rising cost of overseas education, the NDDC has expanded its support to cover undergraduate and postgraduate studies within Nigerian universities. This homegrown initiative not only offers cost-effective educational access but also strengthens Nigeria’s own academic institutions while reducing the financial burden on students.

A Strong Push for STEM

With an eye on the future, the NDDC has prioritized fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The commission views STEM as essential to sustaining the Niger Delta’s development, positioning its youth to take full advantage of the opportunities emerging from the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

How to Apply

Applications for NDDC scholarships are conducted online through the official NDDC website. Prospective candidates are expected to carefully follow the outlined procedures to ensure eligibility.whenever there is time for new opportunity

Who Qualifies?

Applicants must be indigenes of the Niger Delta states – Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers. In addition, they must meet set academic standards, usually a First Class or Second Class Upper degree classification, though certain programmes accept Second Class Lower.

Selection Process

The rigorous selection process includes a Computer-Based Test (CBT) to assess academic aptitude, followed by a verification exercise. This verification is carried out with the applicant’s Local Government Area (LGA) and Community Development Committee (CDC) to ensure all credentials and personal information are authentic.

Documents Needed

Applicants are typically required to upload a passport photograph, local government identification letter, postgraduate admission letter from a recognized university, academic certificates, and an NYSC Discharge or Exemption Certificate.

Stay Updated

The commission urges prospective applicants to monitor its official website regularly, as deadlines and requirements may change. Missing an update could mean losing a vital opportunity.

Driving the Region’s Future

For the NDDC, scholarships are more than just financial aid—they are investments in the region’s future. By empowering young men and women with education and skills, the commission is building the foundation for long-term prosperity and stability in the Niger Delta.
