Introduction
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), has made agriculture a cornerstone of his development agenda for the Niger Delta region. Recognizing the sector’s critical role in driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and reducing poverty, he has implemented targeted programs that empower both youths and women. Notably, several initiatives under his leadership focus specifically on women in agriculture, ensuring they play an active role in building sustainable livelihoods.
Training and Empowerment Initiatives
Under Dr. Ogbuku’s guidance, the NDDC has introduced vocational and skills training programs in agriculture, with emphasis on livestock farming and agro-processing. These initiatives are designed to equip women and youths with practical knowledge to establish and manage agribusiness ventures. A remarkable example is the empowerment of 200 women and youths in Rivers State who were trained in modern techniques of livestock farming and agro-processing.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Dr. Ogbuku has championed strategic partnerships to amplify the reach and effectiveness of agricultural programs. The NDDC partnered with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises – Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project. This collaboration provides women and other beneficiaries with opportunities in agribusiness, thereby transforming lives across the region.
Strategic Alliances for Women Empowerment
The NDDC is also exploring collaboration with the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), led by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The initiative prioritizes women’s empowerment in agriculture and other sectors. By aligning with RHI, the Commission strengthens its commitment to creating platforms where women can thrive as key players in agribusiness and economic development.
Agricultural Summits and Retreats
In pursuit of sustainable development, Dr. Ogbuku has proposed regional agricultural summits and mini-retreats. These gatherings will bring together state governments, farmers, and stakeholders to design strategies that harness each state’s agricultural potential. Women are expected to play a central role in these engagements, ensuring their voices and contributions shape the future of food security in the Niger Delta.
Farmer Empowerment and Support Programs
The Commission has rolled out farmer empowerment initiatives aimed at boosting crop cultivation and food production. Communities across the Niger Delta have benefited from programs supporting the cultivation of rice, cassava, and other staples. By integrating modern farming techniques and mechanization, these efforts enhance productivity while empowering local farmers—especially women—with the resources needed to build sustainable agribusinesses.
Conclusion
Through targeted interventions, strategic partnerships, and inclusive development programs, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku has positioned women as essential drivers of agricultural transformation in the Niger Delta. His leadership not only addresses food security and poverty alleviation but also ensures that women are empowered to lead the way in creating resilient and sustainable agricultural enterprises.
