Commitment to Healthcare in Underserved Areas
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), under the leadership of Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has reinforced its commitment to making healthcare accessible to even the most remote communities across the Niger Delta region. Through a combination of targeted programs and strategic interventions, the commission is addressing the healthcare challenges faced by rural populations.
Free Medical Missions
A key initiative is the resumption of the NDDC’s widely acclaimed Free Healthcare Medical Programme. These medical missions are designed to take healthcare directly to communities where access to hospitals and clinics is limited. Services provided include general consultations, laboratory tests, minor and major surgeries—covering eye-related conditions and gynecological cases—and health education campaigns. Reports confirm that a large number of residents in underserved areas have already benefitted from these missions.
Construction and Rehabilitation of Health Centers
To create sustainable healthcare access, the NDDC has embarked on constructing and rehabilitating health centers across its mandate states. These facilities are equipped with modern medical infrastructure, reducing the burden of long-distance travel for rural residents seeking healthcare. The initiative ensures that communities have permanent medical structures to rely on.
Partnership for Health Insurance Schemes
In collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, the NDDC has introduced a health insurance project tailored to the needs of rural communities. The scheme provides affordable and sustainable coverage for families, offering a long-term solution to healthcare accessibility in the Niger Delta.
Support Through Medical Equipment Donations
To strengthen hospitals and emergency response systems, the NDDC has distributed vital medical equipment, including ambulances, to healthcare facilities across the nine Niger Delta states. This effort enhances capacity for patient care and rapid response in emergencies.
From Transaction to Transformation
Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that the NDDC is undergoing a paradigm shift from “transaction to transformation,” with health as a central focus of this new vision. He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to working with stakeholders to improve healthcare and other essential sectors that directly impact the well-being and quality of life of the people of the Niger Delta.
