The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), under the visionary leadership of its Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has commenced the Local Postgraduate Scholarship Award Ceremony for the 2025/2026 academic session. The event, held at the Aztech Arcum Event Centre in Port Harcourt, marks a significant milestone in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to build human capacity across the Niger Delta region.

This initiative represents a bold expansion of NDDC’s educational empowerment drive, which has traditionally focused on foreign scholarships. The introduction of the local postgraduate scholarship scheme underscores the Commission’s resolve to strengthen the intellectual foundation of the Niger Delta by partnering with Nigerian universities to train more scholars at home.

The scholarship covers a broad spectrum of disciplines, including engineering, agricultural sciences, environmental management, geosciences, information technology, management sciences, and law. This diversity ensures that the beneficiaries contribute meaningfully across key sectors vital to the region’s transformation.

A Strategic Shift in Educational Empowerment

The introduction of the local postgraduate scholarship scheme signals a deliberate and forward-thinking shift in NDDC’s educational strategy. According to Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the initiative is aimed at broadening access to quality education while ensuring that beneficiaries remain rooted in the Niger Delta’s socio-economic realities.

Similarly, the Director of Education, Dr. Angela Chukwudifu, emphasized that empowering scholars within local universities would help them stay connected to the developmental challenges of their environment. She noted that this approach fosters a sense of responsibility, community engagement, and ownership in addressing the region’s issues.

A Renewed Commitment to Regional Development

The NDDC’s continued investment in both foreign and local postgraduate scholarship programs reflects its unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and professionals from the Niger Delta. Through education, the Commission seeks to unlock the region’s vast human potential, ensuring that its people not only participate in but also drive its progress.

Under Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership, the NDDC is charting a new course—one that places education at the heart of sustainable development and envisions a brighter, more prosperous future for the Niger Delta and its people.
