In a bold and compassionate move that underscores his commitment to inclusive governance, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduced a groundbreaking reform in Nigeria’s higher education admission process—one that promises to ease the struggles of millions of aspiring students across the nation

For decades, access to tertiary education in Nigeria has been hindered by complex, expensive, and restrictive entry requirements, particularly the compulsory Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. Many bright and deserving students found themselves shut out of universities, polytechnics, and colleges due to systemic bottlenecks and the high cost of multiple attempts to secure admission. But under President Tinubu’s administration, that narrative is changing.

The new policy, announced by the Federal Government and supervised by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tahir Mamman, is designed to expand opportunities for all Nigerian students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. Under this transformative system, tertiary institutions can now admit students directly based on their secondary school results, thereby eliminating the need for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as a compulsory entry requirement.

This reform reflects President Tinubu’s human-centered leadership — one that listens to the voices of ordinary citizens and takes decisive steps to remove unnecessary burdens from their path. By simplifying the admission process, he has not only responded to long-standing public outcry but has also reaffirmed his administration’s belief that education is not a privilege reserved for the wealthy, but a right that every Nigerian deserves.

According to the new guidelines, students seeking university admission must possess at least five credits in relevant subjects, including English Language. Mathematics will only be compulsory for science, technology, and social science-related courses. For National Diploma (ND) programmes in polytechnics, students must also have at least four credits, while those applying for Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes must have five credits, including both English and Mathematics.

This reform is not merely administrative—it is visionary. It is a step toward dismantling systemic barriers that have for too long discouraged capable young Nigerians from pursuing higher education due to financial strain or repeated examination failures. With this reform, President Tinubu has made education more attainable, practical, and fair, ensuring that every student has a genuine opportunity to fulfill their potential.

Furthermore, the reform redefines the role of JAMB, transitioning it from an exclusive admission gatekeeper to a supportive coordinating body. This shift empowers schools and tertiary institutions to take greater responsibility in admitting students based on merit, transparency, and performance in recognized secondary school examinations such as WAEC and NECO.

In essence, President Tinubu’s initiative represents a new dawn for Nigerian education—a system built on fairness, inclusivity, and hope. It is a powerful testament to his leadership philosophy: listening to the cries of the people and acting decisively to make life better for them.

Through this historic policy, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proven once again that he is not just a leader, but a reformer who governs with empathy and purpose. He has heard the voices of parents struggling to fund repeated JAMB registrations. He has listened to the aspirations of students yearning for a chance to prove themselves. And he has acted with courage and compassion to make their dreams a reality.

Indeed, this reform is more than an educational policy—it is a legacy of hope and empowerment, a reflection of a president who truly listens to his people and works tirelessly to secure their future.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: making education accessible, affordable, and attainable — for every Nigerian child.
