In every generation, there are individuals whose commitment to public service stands out so remarkably that institutions and communities are compelled to honour them. One such distinguished figure is Dr. Doodei Agbabou Week, a seasoned administrator, visionary agricultural development expert, and an accomplished leader whose impact continues to shape the Niger Delta and the nation at large. It is therefore no surprise that the Faculty of Agriculture, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Ndele Campus, Port Harcourt, has nominated him for an Award of Excellence in Service at its 2nd Annual Conference scheduled for November 19–21, 2025.

This recognition reflects not only Dr. Week’s professional accomplishments, but also his unwavering dedication to advancing agriculture, education, youth empowerment, environmental management, and sustainable development in the Niger Delta region.

Dr. Week’s career is a testament to purposeful leadership rooted in competence, empathy, and a profound understanding of public-sector systems. With rich experience as a public servant and technical expert, he has successfully managed over 100 career staff and more than 1,000 development projects across the Niger Delta. His work covers a wide spectrum of infrastructure—roads, bridges, hospitals, educational facilities, jetties, hostels, power installations, as well as complex ecological interventions such as land reclamation, canalization, and shoreline protection during his tenure as State Coordinator and Director in the NDDC State Office, Bayelsa State.

Yet his influence extends far beyond infrastructure. Dr. Week has remained a strong advocate for human capital development. He championed extensive capacity-building programmes that empowered over 8,000 youth and women across the Niger Delta with agricultural skills. He also implemented loan schemes in partnership with Deposit Money Banks, supporting more than 5,000 beneficiaries while serving as Desk Officer and later as Director of the NDDC Agriculture and Fisheries Directorate. His leadership in these roles helped promote entrepreneurship, stimulate rural economies, and improve livelihoods across several communities.

One of his most significant contributions to Nigeria’s agricultural development is the conception and establishment of the Bayelsa Aqua-culture Farm, one of the largest upland fish farms in the country, covering over 300 hectares. As Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources in Bayelsa State between 2016 and 2020, he also supervised the completion of a 60-ton/day cassava industrial starch mill, further deepening the state’s agricultural value chain and enhancing food-processing capacity.

Today, Dr. Week serves as the Director of Procurement at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a position he has held since November 2022. His depth of knowledge, analytical skill, ethical disposition, and structured approach to public procurement continue to strengthen transparency, fairness, and value for money within the Commission.

His academic accomplishments are equally outstanding. Dr. Week holds a Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of Port Harcourt, along with two Master’s degrees—Disaster Risk Management & Development from the University of Port Harcourt and Agricultural Economics from Rivers State University. He also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Science and Education from the University of Ibadan and an NCE in Agricultural Science from Rivers State College of Education. Demonstrating continuous learning, he is currently pursuing another Ph.D. in Agricultural and Applied Economics at Rivers State University.

Dr. Week’s quest for excellence is further evident in his numerous professional qualifications: Project Management Professional certification, International Disaster Risk Management certification, Leadership and Corporate Governance training from Lagos Business School, Harvard Negotiation and Leadership training, among others. He is a Professional Fellow of the Emergency, Crisis and Risk Management Institute; a Professional Fellow of the Institute of Strategic Management Nigeria (ISMN); a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management; and an associate of the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists.

These achievements reflect a man deeply committed to service—an opinion leader, farmer, technocrat, family man, and nation-builder. Born in 1972, Dr. Week remains grounded by strong family values, happily married and blessed with children and grandchildren who continue to inspire his journey.

The Faculty of Agriculture at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, in its award notification, highlighted its admiration for his contributions, especially his support during the National Universities Commission (NUC) resource verification of the faculty's six academic programmes. Thanks to his commitment during the fund drive, all six programmes have now been fully verified for student enrolment—a milestone the university continues to celebrate.

As the university prepares for its annual conference, the Faculty of Agriculture has also extended an invitation for his continued partnership and support in advancing education, research, and agribusiness. Their heartfelt message, signed by Prof. Joseph E. O. Ansa, Chairman of the Conference and Publication Committee, expresses deep appreciation for Dr. Week’s unwavering dedication.

This recognition is both a celebration and a call to continue the impactful journey Dr. Week has charted. His career exemplifies what becomes possible when leadership, vision, professionalism, and integrity come together in service of society.

The story of Dr. Doodei Agbabou Week is one of purposeful excellence—one that inspires the Niger Delta and Nigeria to continue striving for transformation, sustainability, and progress. His award is well-deserved, and his legacy continues to shine brightly.
