Bayelsa State witnessed a momentous milestone on Tuesday as one of its newly acquired state-owned aircraft completed a successful inaugural flight into the Bayelsa International Airport — a feat celebrated by dignitaries, including the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbuku, who played a prominent role in the historic event.
The ATR-72/600 aircraft departed the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 09:30hrs with about 50 passengers on board. Among them were Governor Douye Diri, former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah, members of the National Assembly Caucus, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, and NDDC Managing Director Dr Samuel Ogbuku, whose attendance underscored the Commission’s commitment to regional connectivity and development.
The aircraft touched down at the Bayelsa International Airport at 10:40hrs to the cheers of an excited crowd, receiving the traditional water-cannon salute that marked its formal welcome.
Governor Diri hailed the day as a historic breakthrough, emphasizing that the aircraft’s arrival aligns with his administration’s dedication to enhancing the state’s air connectivity and economic opportunities. He highlighted that the launch of Bayelsa’s commercial air service is a fulfillment of the state’s long-standing promise to its people.
He further announced that the aircraft, initially registered under Pioneer Airline, would now fly under Air Bayelsa or Bayelsa Air, reflecting its true identity as a state-owned asset.
Governor Diri also paid tribute to past leaders — notably the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and former Governor Seriake Dickson — for laying the foundation that made this achievement possible.
He extended appreciation to Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airline, and the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for their support in realizing this aviation milestone.
In his welcome remarks, Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), noted that the airline will operate daily flights to Lagos and Abuja, with plans to expand services across other Niger Delta states.
Captain Henry Ungbuku, Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, expressed deep gratitude to the governor and assured the people of Bayelsa that the airline remains committed to reflecting their aspirations and delivering efficient service.
Premium Trust Bank CEO, Mr. Emmanuel Emefienim, described the achievement as a testament to visionary leadership, praising the seamless collaboration between the bank and the state government.
Senator Konbowei Benson, speaking for the Bayelsa National Assembly Caucus, commended Governor Diri’s foresight and pledged the caucus’ support for the state’s development initiatives.
Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, lauded the effort and encouraged the government to ensure sustainability by institutionalizing payment for official flights.
Dr Ogbuku’s Role and Contribution
In his remarks, NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, congratulated the state government and described the aircraft acquisition as a transformational step that will strengthen socioeconomic ties within the region.
He emphasized that the NDDC stands ready to partner with Air Bayelsa to support its operations and contribute meaningfully to its long-term success.
Dr Ogbuku noted that improved air connectivity is essential for stimulating commerce, boosting development, and unlocking new opportunities for the people of Bayelsa and the wider Niger Delta.
PANDEF National Chairman, Dr Boladei Igali, also praised Governor Diri for his accomplishments and assured the forum’s continued support for the government’s initiatives.
