At the heart of Yenagoa on Tuesday, November 25th, the Bayelsa Creatives Converge 2.0 gathered some of the region’s brightest young innovators, storytellers, digital talents, and emerging industry leaders. But it was the engagement session with the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) that set the tone for a deeper, transformational conversation on the future of youth empowerment in the Niger Delta.
Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, speaking with uncommon candour and humility, drew from his own personal journey — a journey marked not by shortcuts or privilege, but by discipline, consistency, and unwavering belief in the power of honest work. Addressing the young creatives before him, he stressed that greatness is never accidental. It is built daily through choices anchored on perseverance and a refusal to compromise one’s values.
He encouraged the youths to reject the temptation of shortcuts and instead embrace the long, steady path of growth, learning, and skill development. “Every opportunity you encounter,” he said, “is not just an experience but an investment in your future. Your background or family name does not determine your destination — your mindset and discipline do.”
Dr. Ogbuku used the platform to reaffirm the NDDC’s renewed commitment to expanding youth-focused initiatives across the Niger Delta. These include the NDDC Youth Internship Scheme, designed to give young people practical industry experience; the Niger Delta Chamber of Commerce, which serves as a catalyst for innovation and enterprise development; and a range of emerging programmes targeted at tech-driven creativity, entrepreneurship, and global competitiveness.
Beyond opportunities, he also raised an important concern — the rising trend of cybercrime and cyberbullying among some youths. He described it as a dangerous diversion from the limitless possibilities available in today’s digital economy. Instead of using technology for harm, he urged young people to explore pathways such as software engineering, digital branding, high-value freelancing, content creation, and remote international work.
According to him, the digital economy is no longer an option but a global reality — one in which the Niger Delta must claim its place. “Technology is our region’s pathway forward,” he emphasized. “It levels the playing field and gives every young person the power to innovate, build, and connect with the world.”
Dr. Ogbuku expressed confidence that with the right mindset and the right platforms, the Niger Delta youth can compete with the best anywhere in the world. He reminded them that the future of the region is bright, not because of its oil or natural resources, but because of its people — especially the young, creative minds shaping new possibilities every day.
As the session ended, it was clear that the message resonated deeply. The Bayelsa Creatives Converge 2.0 was more than an event; it became a moment of awakening — an affirmation that the young people of the Niger Delta are not just talented, but are positioned to lead the region into a new era of innovation and prosperity.
