Honour, in the Niger Delta tradition, is never given lightly. It is earned through years of visible service, consistency of character, and a proven commitment to the wellbeing of the people. It was therefore a moment rich in meaning and symbolism when the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, was formally installed as the PERE SE-BOBO of Ogu Kingdom, an honour conferred by the Ogu Divisional Council of Chiefs at the palace of the Amanyanabo of Ogu Kingdom.
The installation followed Dr. Ogbuku’s participation in the revered Omuaru Boat Regatta, a mandatory cultural rite that speaks deeply to the identity of riverine communities. Beyond its colourful display, the Omuaru symbolizes courage, unity, strength, and acceptance into the collective soul of the people. By observing this sacred tradition, Dr. Ogbuku demonstrated profound respect for Ogu customs and affirmed his willingness to engage communities not merely as beneficiaries of development, but as partners whose heritage and values must be honoured.
Across the Niger Delta, chieftaincy titles are not ceremonial ornaments. They are endorsements of integrity, leadership, and service. To be so honoured by a kingdom is to be publicly affirmed as a man whose actions have touched lives and whose leadership has earned trust. The conferment of the PERE SE-BOBO title on Dr. Ogbuku stands as a powerful acknowledgment of his contributions to development and his deliberate efforts to strengthen the relationship between the NDDC and host communities throughout the region.
Under Dr. Ogbuku’s leadership, the NDDC has increasingly embraced an approach that prioritizes dialogue, inclusion, and respect for traditional institutions. This philosophy recognizes that sustainable development cannot thrive in isolation from the people it is meant to serve. By working closely with traditional rulers and community leaders, Dr. Ogbuku has helped to build bridges of trust that are essential for peace, project ownership, and long-term impact in the Niger Delta.
The honour bestowed by the Ogu Kingdom also reflects the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in modern governance. In a region where history, culture, and land are deeply intertwined, the role of monarchs and councils of chiefs remains central to social stability. Dr. Ogbuku’s engagement with these institutions underscores a leadership style that blends administrative competence with cultural diplomacy, ensuring that development policies are grounded in local realities and communal values.
More than a personal recognition, the installation of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku as PERE SE-BOBO is a collective statement from the people of Ogu Kingdom: that true leadership is seen, felt, and remembered. It is a tribute to a man whose influence extends beyond offices and official titles, reaching into the hearts of communities that now proudly claim him as one of their own.
As the drums fade and the rituals conclude, what remains is a lasting message. Dr. Samuel Ogbuku is honoured because he merits it—honoured by tradition, embraced by communities, and recognized as a leader whose vision for the Niger Delta resonates at both the grassroots and institutional levels. In every sense, the title of PERE SE-BOBO is a fitting crown for a man whose service continues to inspire respect across the region.
