AYAKORO, BAYELSA STATE – The 68th Annual Eyal Obeyin Festival reached a historic crescendo this afternoon as the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, joined the Managing Director and CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry and burgeoning developmental progress of the Ayakoro community.

The festival, a cornerstone of Ogbia heritage, serves as a poignant tribute to the founding fathers of Ayakoro. The 2026 edition transformed the community into a vibrant hub of Ijaw tradition, featuring breathtaking boat regattas, high-stakes wrestling competitions, and rhythmic traditional dance displays that echoed the resilience of the Tarakiri Kingdom.

A Brotherhood of Progress

The presence of both Governor Diri and Dr. Ogbuku underscored a powerful message of unity. As a son of the Tarakiri Kingdom himself, Governor Diri emphasized that cultural heritage is the "indestructible glue" that binds the people of the Niger Delta.

The Governor’s visit was more than ceremonial; it was a validation of the "Government of Assured Prosperity" and its success in fostering grassroots stability. He lauded the people of Ayakoro for their peaceful disposition, noting that their cooperation has been instrumental in allowing developmental projects to take root.

The Synergy of Transformation

Witnessing the "remarkable transformation" of Ayakoro, the Governor highlighted the seamless collaboration between:

  • The Ayakoro Community: For maintaining a peaceful and welcoming environment for investment.
  • The Bayelsa State Government: For consistent policy implementation and infrastructure focus.
  • The NDDC: Under the leadership of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the commission has pivoted toward meaningful regional intervention, aligning its goals with state-led initiatives.
  • "The progress we see today is a testament to what is possible when the state and the NDDC work in tandem for the benefit of the people," Governor Diri remarked.

Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Growth

In a move that sparked widespread celebration among residents, Governor Diri reaffirmed the administration's commitment to the Akaba–Ogu-Okodi road project. This critical artery is set to integrate Ayakoro more deeply into the state's economic grid, facilitating easier transport for goods and services and boosting local commerce.

"Our administration remains committed to the philosophy that no community in Bayelsa State shall be left behind," the Governor assured. "The Akaba-Ogu-Okodi road is not just asphalt and stone; it is a gateway to economic liberation for the Ogbia people."

    A Future Rooted in Tradition

As the 68th Eyal Obeyin Festival concludes, the narrative in Ayakoro is no longer just about the glories of the past, but the promise of the future. With the combined leadership of Governor Douye Diri and Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Niger Delta is witnessing a rare era where tradition and modernization do not just coexist—they propel one another forward.

For the people of Ayakoro, the 2026 festival will be remembered as the moment culture met a renewed commitment to prosperity.
