Executive Overview: A Renaissance of Heritage

​The 2026 Ayakoro Annual Cultural Festival, popularly known as Eyal Obeyin (The Crossing), has concluded as a resounding success, setting a new benchmark for cultural tourism in the Niger Delta. Under the visionary patronage and facilitation of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Managing Director/CEO of the NDDC and Deputy Paramount Ruler of Ayakoro, the 68th edition evolved from a local tradition into a world-class spectacle.

​The 2026 theme centered on "Resilience and the Courage to Confront the Unknown," celebrating the historic 1958 relocation of the community from its erosion-threatened old site to its current location.

Sequential Report of Activities

​Day 1: Friday, February 27, 2026 – The Spiritual Awakening

​The festival commenced with a deep reverence for the ancestors.

  • ​Purification Rites: Community priests and elders performed traditional cleansing ceremonies at the waterfront to usher in peace.
  • ​Traditional Wrestling (Mbi): The youth of the five compounds (Egba-Polo, Erimme-Polo, Onugakeme-Polo, Abidewari-Polo, and Ogbuku-Polo) engaged in spirited wrestling bouts, symbolizing the strength of the Ijaw man.
  • ​Lighting the Flame: Dr. Samuel Ogbuku officially opened the festival village, showcasing local artifacts and historical relics of the Ayakoro people.

​Day 2: Saturday, February 28, 2026 – The Grand Finale and Eyal Obeyin

​This was the pinnacle of the celebration, drawing a massive crowd of international tourists and top-tier dignitaries.

  • ​Arrival of Dignitaries: Dr. Ogbuku played host to the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, and the Chairman of the Occasion, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana).
  • ​Boat Regatta: A colorful display of decorated war canoes and rhythmic paddling showcased the community’s mastery of the water.
  • ​Masquerade Performances: The legendary Ogogo deity displays and vibrant masquerade dances captivated the audience, representing the protection and fertility of the land.
  • ​Keynote Address: Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that the festival is more than entertainment; it is a "practical step towards harnessing the tourism potential of the Niger Delta" to boost the regional economy.
  • ​Gala Night: The day ended with a "Night of Stars," featuring Ijaw musical legends and contemporary artists, funded through Dr. Ogbuku’s collaborative efforts.

​Day 3: Sunday, March 1, 2026 – Thanksgiving and Community Outreach

​The festival concluded with a focus on future development.

  • ​Inter-denominational Service: A thanksgiving service was held to appreciate God for a peaceful relocation since 1958.
  • ​Developmental Advocacy: During the closing remarks, Dr. Ogbuku successfully advocated for more state-led infrastructure projects, with Governor Diri pledging to expedite the Akaba-Okodi Road to further open Ayakoro to the world.
