WILBERFORCE ISLAND, BAYELSA — In a strategic move to deepen democratic values and civic consciousness, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in collaboration with the Foundation for Citizens Empowerment and Sensitization on Civic Responsibility Initiative, recently hosted the Project New Nigeria and Voters Sensitization Programme.

The event, held at Niger Delta University (NDU), underscores the commission’s commitment to academic engagement and youth empowerment under the leadership of Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

The sensitization drive aims to bridge the gap between governance and the grassroots, focusing specifically on the academic community as a catalyst for regional change. By bringing the "Project New Nigeria" vision to NDU, the NDDC and its partners seek to achieve three primary goals: fostering civic responsibility by educating students on constitutional rights, strengthening regional governance through transparency, and empowering informed voters to influence the socio-economic trajectory of Bayelsa State.

Under Dr. Ogbuku’s administration, the NDDC has pivoted toward a "Transformation" agenda, moving beyond infrastructure to holistic human capital development. Recent milestones at Niger Delta University include the "Operation Light Up" project, which has significantly improved campus safety and nighttime study conditions through modern lighting installations.

Additionally, there are renewed efforts to complete and unveil a 650-bed hostel complex, designed to drastically reduce student housing shortages, alongside the establishment of collaborative research frameworks to tackle the unique environmental and health challenges facing the Niger Delta. The collaboration marks a significant chapter in the NDDC’s mission to ensure that the region’s development is driven by an informed, empowered, and civically active citizenry.
